lyrics
Tell you a story about a guy I know, packed his shit, left and hit the road
Never to look back, left and that was that and headed on his way
Hitched roads out west, swam streams in the east
never once complained of his tired feet
just miles ahead a days a day, there will be no other way
met simple folk on country streets, in backwards bars serving warm whiskey to soothe his dreams, he never stayed long enough to get his name
spent two weeks in country jail, disturbing the peace speaking how he feels, roughed up a bit, 500 bail, cold showers and three warm meals.
Met a girl from the South, just north of state lines, a fair skinned brunette warm smiles and kind.
The secrets kept, he would not find. Days they traveled and nights they slept, a forming bond with passionate sex, no sights unseen they were arm in arm, two travelers causing no harm.
One day he wakes up to an awkward silence, finding nothing in his wake money gone and empty safe, not believing, not him, no not this place.
Went straight to the cops to explain his case, gave a description and drew her face, all was lost no one to blame, all he had was a first name.
We can dance, we can drink, we can sing, we can fight we can fuck. But what's there left to do, when enough is never enough.
We can live we can die we can raise our arms high we can steal we can lie, but what's there left to do, when time is never enough
